Anyone using a graphics tablet with Reaper? If so, how well is it working out for you? Has it been worth the money? What tablet would you recommend, if any? Thanks

RE: Using a graphics tablet with Reaper?

Completely fine here in general :) Been using various wacoms over the last 8 years there about. I use them in absolute mode (so that the pad area represents your screen so move to the top left of the pad and the cursor jumps there too). This mode does take time to get use to though but I find it far more accurate and useful and less painful because of less repetition. The main benefit for me is much less problems with RSI than mice, just going back to a mouse causes me pain after a while now. I will warn though that the wacom driver for the latest pen and touch bamboo is pretty crap and unreliable (at least on win7) and it can sometimes not load properly on boot or mess up but this could be system related, check their forums for more info. I still have my intuos 3 which is bloody awesome, works solid, nibs don't wear out and drivers are fine (just no touch support). Ask away if you want any other info.

Aside from RSI prevention, do you find the tablet to be any easier to use for audio/midi editing?

RE: Using a graphics tablet with Reaper?

I went and picked up the Bamboo Pen, ie. Wacom's cheapest. I've been giving it a try, going through the tutes and then messing around with it on my own. The pen and tablet is not what I had hoped it might be. It feels really clumsy. It's the hovering that gets me. I have a very hard time being accurate with the pen when I have to hover it above the tablet. If I could move the cursor through direct contact with the tablet and then use the buttons on the pen like mouse buttons, that would make it alot simpler for me. I'll see if I can change this behavior in the preferences. If I can't, I'm sure my wife won't mind using it with Photoshop. Thanks

I find it very accurate for editing but in absolute mode where it's set to one monitor. In the prefs you can change it to "professional mode" where the buttons only trigger when you touch the actual pad. It takes a good few days to get use to and a lot of people I know give up within a hour or so. :) I can only suggest to go through the settings and to keep trying :) It also makes a pretty good MIDI controller too, an xy pad with pressure on z so 3 way control. It may not be for you though, what was the reason to try it in the first place? Graphics work?

I use a tablet for drawing not music. There is one nice plug called tab2midi but I think it wasn't the most compatible w/ REAPER with my last attempt which was admittedly a while ago. But Tab2Midi turns your tab into a Kaos Pad or something like that. At the time I tried it it had to be the focused plug to work and somehow this felt a bit problematic for me, but I don't recall perfectly now. Maybe I should try it again. ;----------------------------------------------------- I choose REAPER!!!
