I do alot of stereo mixes. I often check these mixes through a prologic decoder, to ensure there are no untidy steering errors into the surrounds-in the case that the mix is screened through the decoder. This brings to mind a question. Very often the stereo mixes of music which are placed in the shows are the main offenders when issues arise. However, I believe that this steering artifacting would occur, even if i were doing a stereo surround mix. I suppose i would just be aware of it sooner. How is a situation like this dealt with-when doing a dolby surround mix, and the music comes to you mixed stereo, and some content in the music is causing odd things in the surround channel? thanks
Anders, If you are going to do Surround, buy the Dolby Tools plug in. Then you can monitor through the matrix. For Stereo Music for surround first take the music cue and run it through the decoder. You will then have a Left, Center, Right and Surround. You can then adjust the relationship or balance of the L,C,R,S. The cue then will then fold back in just fine back into a Lt/Rt. Spend the $650 and buy the plug in. Your Pro Logic reciever probably cost that much. Hope this Helps,
Thanks Georgia and Marti. Another question- Is it fairly common, when doing a mix for a DV piece, to do an LtRt? Clients(at least the ones i get) rarely know what that is. Should I suggest it? Thanks
Thanks again. I'm pretty much doing what you suggested: mixing select projects in surround. I do have the Dolby Plug in. Limited DSP (only mix core card) requires alot of predubbing(ie. predub dialog do music surround mix, fx etc) This is probably what is done anyway at big post houses, but when your a one man show its very time consuming, especially with features. Anyway, if I might trouble you or anyone else wishing to offer input, I'm looking for a budget set of matched monitors (LCRSrSl). any suggestions are welcome. thanks

I'd be happy to hear any suggestions. Thanks for the BlueSky tip. As far as upgrading to HD, I may remain legacy for a while, take advantage of declining mix farm prices.
