I'm running 9.04 and have the Lacie extension installed. Can't record on the LaCie but have no problem recognizing it (it's used for storage). If I format it with Special > Erase Disk will my Mac recognize it? I heard the 9.2 firewire drivers are way different than 9.04. Thanks
Hi, I am trying to move a very important project off the G4 mix plus system in the studio where I work. The band specified that they would like to use a Lacie D2 80 gig firewire drive to transfer the project. I obtained one of these drives and installed it as directed but when I attached the fire wire cable to the Lacie drive smoke started to billow out of the lacie firewire port producing a strong smell of cooking electronics. Lacie were not at all suprised by this and claimed that it happened to 1 in every 1,000 drives. I have now recieved a replacement drive and have copied the project to it. However, protools will niether play sessions from the drive nor record to it, claiming that it is not a valid audio drive. Does anybody know why this would be?
Since you said "installed as directed", I would assume you mean that you did something more in depth than just plug the drive into an available firewire port. If you'll search the board, you'll probably find many places where people have mentioned that you can't use any type of firewire extensions other than the ones that are installed with the OS with ProTools. So, if you did install the LaCie extensions, get rid of all of them and try again. It's also important that you only format the drive with the apple drive utility (Special > Erase Disk). If you didn't, let us know what you did and if there's an error code and let's go from there. Good luck.
when you say you "installed it as directed " directed by who?! I use the lacie drives regularly and have had few problems. Normally I just pull them out the box, and plug them in. I format them as HFS, when prompted by the message I get from the computer when I plug the drive in. It then works fine. Which Lacie did you get, was it the one in the silver box with the blue light that you can screw a base onto?! You only need the apple FW extension, no other fw driveres are neccessary
When I said "installed as directed" I was refering to the very brief instructions in the lacie e-manual that came with it. i.e. plug in the drive psu, boot the mac and wait for the desk top, then connect the drive to the mac with the fire wire cable. The replacement drive mounts properly but it is possible that there are other fire wire extensions on the system, I wil go and check. Thanks.
