it would help me a lot when i am working on a melody if i could record midi notes directly in the piano roll. i end up going back and forth from the sequencer to the piano roll . record stuff, editing it, recording , changing some notes , recording, adjusting the velocity , recording , adjusting the velocity again, copying patterns, drinking water, recording... it would make a lot of sense if we could do all that in the same window.
You can. Only thing is that there is no record button in the editor itself. You either have to give focus to the main view to trigger the record button there and switch back to the MIDI editor, or you can use the 'pass through key to main view' action. It is in the MIDI editor section of the action list. Search for it and assign your usual record key to it. EDIT: Sorry, forgot the following: You need to set the track's record mode to Record: overdub in existing items and have the item selected for it to work.
The "pass through key" action works really well! It threw me for a moment, because the "Run" buttons were disabled. But if you assign it to the R key (or whatever you have mapped for 'Record') then it works just fine. Still... a number of different windows have pass through issues... eg., the undo window doesn't pass the spacebar (not sure if it passes other keys.) Would be nice to get those sorted out and more consistent.
I didn't know about the Pass Thru Key either, that's fantastic! I do think/agree this should probably be the default...but I'm all for a record button in the midi editor as well.
