MessageAuthor

Hi, I've been using PT for a while now, filling up my Digidrives and never backing up - - - Shame on me...I am not too familiar with backup systems. Are there any suggestions for a safe and not too uncommon backup system? Thanks, Redsandblu

RE: Reliable backup???

The cheepest is to burn your sessions to CDR The most common is Sony AIT or Sony DDS 4 both are around $1000-$1600, both are very reliable and have been working for years. Some other options are DVD RAM but this is at best 2x speed and backing up a big records will take some time. 9 gigs on both sided DVD. DDS 4 /AIT all store around 20 meg. uncopressed and burn at unbielivable speeds. 1 gig in 3 mins. Back up software is needed for DDS 4 and AIT the stardard is Mezzo 3.8 or Retrospec. I use Mezzp with great results. CDR are cheep .29 each you can put 750 megs on each cd , you'll just have to manage you media files placments carefully, also DDS 4 and AIT are tape based media, and CDR/DVD is burned to disk, perminately, or so they say. Good luck I hope this helps.PS same on you, but I guessyour very lucky not to have lost your shirt...

RE: Reliable backup???

I use a DDS-3 drive with Retrospect. The DDS-3 holds about 12GB uncompressed and the tapes are about $10 each. My proceedure is to set up a script in Retrospect that backs up the Pro Tools drives every day at midnight. Retrospect looks at the contents of the drives and compares it to a snapshot of the drive from the last back-up. It then only writes the new or revised data to the tape. Twice a month I do a complete back-up of the PT drives to archive tapes that I store away for future reference. I've been using this system since late 1998 and have yet to lose a "bit" of data.
