Anybody know if I'm allowed to freely redistribute the Microsoft Windows Media Codecs Download Package Version 8.0 on cd? I know you need a lisence to redistribute their Mediaplayer, but I haven't found anything about doing this. I have some free video demos I have created for my clients.
Since I'm on the topic of the microsoft codecs, does anybody know where the codecs are installed to? I wanna write something that will detect if a client actually needs to install the codec or not. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Using registry keys may be the best option here.. take a system without the codecs installed, run a tool that catches registry changes, install the codec and you know what you're looking for. The codec itself gets installed to c:\windows\system32
I believe you want "regmon" - it's available at along with many other extremely useful utilities. -h
