I still experience a lot of glitches etc. so I continued to experiment. One major problem I have is random notes when using VSTi. This becomes most noticeable with drum-plugins since it completely throws the timing off. A few days ago I found out that disabling track-buffering for all tracks gets rid of this. Is there a way to completely disable it? What does it do anyway? Does it improve the performance in certain cases? And then: Today I was using the original Virsyn, which is a bit of a special case. It is multitimbral and open in a new independent window you can't close, as long as the plugin is loaded. If you act as if loading another instance the same instance is used, but automatically a new 'part' is assigned to that track. I wanted to use it for drums, so created three tracks track1: one for part1: bass-drum track2: a second one for part2: snare track3: a third one for the MIDI-item, which sends it's data to track1 and 2 (via MIDI-channel 1 and 2). Now here's the odd part: as soon as I loaded up a fourth track, terrible crackles started to occur. These crackles stopped as soon as I armed track 3, and reppeared as soon as I disarmed it. Further on, disabling anticipative FX processing also got rid of the crackles (however disabling track-buffers helped not). Isn't this really weird? Keep in mind, that this track neither contains/carry any audio-signal nor any FX - only the MIDI-signals are routed to track 1/2. How could this be explained? Does anyone have any idea? I mean: Virsyn is very old and a special case, like I mentioned, but still I assume my findings might illustrate some general problems with Reaper's engine.
Schwa, thank you very much for your explanation - that makes a lot of sense. I never was aware of it though, and I suspect many people with performance problems are not. The glitches I mentioned were during normal playback (without any opened editors). In the case of the random notes I described (which it seems were cured though by disabling track-buffering) it also affected the rendered mixes - prior to knowing about the track-buffering I had to render the tracks to get rid of it.

This thread has been VERY helpful! I've been able to cut my latency on large MIDI projects in half. Can't wait for the auto buffer disable update!!!!!
