I've engineered/produced many commercial recordings and find the 001 a perfectly viable format with which to do so as long as you have good mic's and mic pre's and the necessary musical talent.

YES!!!! Commercial recordings are done on mackie boards and ADATs. (Alex Lifesons "Victor" to name just one. The first alanis morisette(sp?) album was recorded on adat as well, i think) Why not a 001? It is 24bit, has decent sounding eq or compression, great if you get waves or some other thrd party stuff. Decent reverb, I would recommend using something external for reverb or at least Real-Verb. Even the mic pre's are ok if you use a nice mic. (i use a Rode NTV and it sounds great through the 001 mic pre's) 24 tracks is all you get on two inch so it should be enough for most stuff anyway!! So once again: YES!!!!

but, without the SMPTE timeline you simply cannot record a commercial on th 001. you can't spot the people chewing gum or having their "special time" to the sound effects. besides, most people who record commercials can afford cool edit pro or some other $39 software that can do this.

If you live in an area where you can do this, you might want to look into renting nice mics & preamps. It may cost less than you think...

Dear Bigtree Great and classic recordings have been done with far less. All these things are realy not important. There are only two things that have a consistant and undeniable effect on the outcome of any project : 1)the pizza-delivery menu and 2)the guy who has to eat them(you)

To paraphrase what I heard Bruce Swedien say "No one has ever gone into a record store and said, Give me that recording which was done on the SSL, with Neve mic preamps and a U47". To answer your question.... You've got 24 bits get yourself a good mic (414 my favorite) and record the best DANG songs ever. Make records MakE ReCorDS MAKE RECORDS AND Don't come outside until you're done <-----Whoa Dude Calm down....
