ideal mac setup...?

Hi everyone. I've been a PC guy as long as I can remember, but I am now seriously considering buying a mac. I'll be using it for PTLE, digital video editing and web design primarly. Since I'm a mac newbie.. I really don't know much about them (redundant). Anyway, what kind of setup would you guys recommend? I was thinking of a G4, dual 500, 256 ram, 40gb hd, etc etc... I would probably add another ATA66 HD just for audio/video... any thoughts there? Ok, thanks for any help you guys can offer! I hope to be a happy Digi001 user shortly... and hopefully on a mac! -Dave btw: how many IDE channels are availible on a G4? If i were to get a 2nd HD, would I set both HDs as master on separate channels.. and the DVD as the slave on one? what is the typical/ideal setup for 2 HDs and a DVD-ROM? another thing, is the .wav format, cross-platform (sorry if thats a dumb question)? - it would be nice to use an existing CD burner on my PC.. for my protools mixdowns.

You have 2 IDE channels on a G4. I'd be tempted to put my next buy, a second HD, as a master in place of the CDrom, but I'm not sure imyself f it can work? Also, why ATA66? ATA100 have typically bigger ram cache. I for myself am looking at a 46.1 ATA100 IBM deskstar HD.... David.

RE: ideal mac setup...?

Your setup sounds great. I would recommend not buying all that RAM though. Apple RAM is WAY too expensive. Just get the minimum of 64mb and buy the rest 3rd party. I don't remember the exact web address, but if you go to xlr8yourmac.com they have a link to OWC special buys. I just bought 256MB of RAM for $235. That's about $800 less than Apple. I hope I don't sound too much like a commercial - just trying to help. Chris

FYI...I bought my G4-400 from Club Mac. I paid $1494, and 2 128mb of memory for $99 each.
