firstly, hello - this is my first post. just bought my first volvo - a '93 940 lpt estate with 105k on the clock. and straight away, I'm on the scrounge. couple of little niggles, where do you find the engine breather box, how do you remove it and clean it (found an interesting feature in an old copy of car mechanics magazine about servicing the car it stated this should be done when yoou change the oil) - which I'm going to do cant see any reference to it in my Haynes manual either? secondly the air filter box... mines lacking a couple of those lateches off the front - have read a couple of posts in the FAQ section and was considering screwing the lid down - but wondered if anyone here could offer up any 'bodges'. otherwise so far, so good. thanks in anticipation neil

RE: engine breather and air filter gripes

Hi, Welcome to the forums and enjoy your stay here.. :) Welcome to "the dark side" too... :D Engine breather would be, I guess, the crank case ventilation system. Should be located near/about the inlet manifold. Also known/refered to as the flame trap. For service have a read of this: .... The filter box clips should be connected to the box. It they come off the retainers have broken. Screws may be a way forward, or get a second hand box from a breaker like Salvo or CP motors. Des. . . ;)

Hi, On the 940 you should be able to access all connection points for the pipework without removing the manifold. It maybe easier without it there, but not impossible. It is likely that the pipework and trap itself will be perished (pipes certainly) and it maybe worth getting new pipes. The trap can be cleaned with petrol. But again a new one is a fiver (roughly) so maybe a new one and clean the old one ready to swop at the next oil change.. Des. . . ;)

Hi Neil, You do not need to remove the inlet manifold to remove the breather box. It easier if you use 1/4" drive socket set. I think it is a 12mm size. On a 2.3 LPT with the EGR sysyem it is more awkward. It is easier to release the loom from the block to access the 2 bolts. Do get a new o-ring as they usually get hard and seep oil. ivor940
