Hey thanks a million for listening! Pete, Artbay and Ash, yes that pizz. and piano line does have a little stutter. Now here is the thing I learn about producing your own stuff. At first I thought I would fix the stutter but as I was working on the track I became kind of attached to it. This is a bit of a problem - what feels like an "artistic" (pfft!) decision to me having played the track a gazillion times may well just sound like a glitch to someone who hears the track once or twice. Otherwise is the mix OK? I have a bit of a problem judging the low end in my untreated room. Oh and the mids . . . and everything above 2khz :o What about that gong sample, though ??? :D
Nice work! I love the song. I agree with the intro - it still sounds wrong, even after multiple listens. I'm listening through headphones, so my impression of the mix may be distorted. I'd like the solo vocal more out in front. Are you shy about your voice? You shouldn't be. I like the oboes on the intro - they could also stand to be louder, and then pulled back when the lyric enters. There's a bit of guitar noise at 0:57 that you might want to take care of. The glockenspiel/chime at 1:18 sounds nice. Have you considered bringing it up an octave? It seems like a low register for the instrument. There are some problems with the vocals coming back in at 2:09. The guitar solo is a bit loud, especially in relation to the vocals. You might want to fade the guitar end note about a bit faster/bring the vocals up/duck the vocals. At 2:18, the vocal hesitates while the lead guitar interrupts the singer. It sounds like a glitch. Again, ducking the guitar under the vocal might help. When you sing "On..." at 2:34, it doesn't match the volume of the preceding vocal. It might be nice to then fade out the vocal and bring up the guitars when they enter at 2:36. Nice work! It stands up well to multiple listens.
I really like this place :) Artbay - thanks again for the nice words man. I think I am with everyone on the stutter and will put up a smooth-timing mix. dcuny - thank you so much for your very detailed listening and for taking the time to set it out for me. All of those points wil be looked at for the next version.
Not a lot to add, Spike... just wanted to say it's good stuff and worth carrying on with the effort. The mix does seem a bit "cloudy" to me but it may well be the sound you were originally after or my own cloth-ears! :D
Hey thanks Saulo - Cloth ears? You? - I hardly think so! OK, here is a version with quantised and then slightly humanised pizz. strings and piano. There is some other work done in line with dcuny's suggestions including ducking the lead guitar with the lead vocal.
I'm listening to the mix through headphones, so I can't vouch for how accurate it is. I'll check later when I get a chance. The introduction is much smoother, and it's a huge improvement. I'd still like to hear the first entrance of the oboes louder, and then bring it down to where it is at :20. I reserve the right to change my mind when I play it through the speakers. There's still some sort of glitch at :58 - I think it's in the guitar part. The vocals are solid and in front of all the instruments. They sound great. I love the pizzicato at 2:05 at the end of the guitar solo. The "Banish" at 2:18 still sounds like it's being stuttered. One last thought - what if you if you added a huge reverb to the tail of the held "On..." at 2:43 and faded it? You've got a very catchy tune here. :)
