so I'm moving to a new apt. in Manhattan and I need to setup my gear for some edit/mix work that I do out of the house. Are there any online resources for finding out how to float floors (cheaply or reasonably). I'm not trying to built "The Hit Factory A" in my apt...doesn;t need to be be a nicely waxed hardwood floor. I'm just looking to elevate my work area so that my downstairs neighbor isn't all over me for noise.

RE: Floating Floors

auralex.com They make a really easy to use floating system that is shapped like a "U" that fits different size boards, like a 2x4. And it doesnt' raise the floor that much more over the size of the joists. The just plywood on top of that, then your decorative flooring on top of the plywood. Hope that helps. -Tom

Yes that is correct. Also check out their rubber padding - to prevent sound from any cracks. They are the best I have found , and I recently used this on my home studio. Good luck!

RE: Floating Floors

Go down to canal street.. on the west end near where the street opens up to the entrance to the tunnel.. There is a rubber store.. ANYTHING foam or rubber you can buy anywhere else is 1/2 the price. They will cut custom shapes and sizes as well. We trip down there for everything for rubber isolation pucks for speakers to monster isolation pucks for 1000 lb air handlers. They have foam in any and all sizes / thickness and types... Across the street on a side street is a great metal shop. and Price Lumber on 15th and 9th has all sorts of hardware. Between them and home depot you can build a floating floor on the cheap. Cheers georgia PS: sometimes it pays to live in Manhattan.
