quote:
Originally posted by Chief Technician: It is key that only one device is terminated. I don't remember the card too well, but if the external jaz and the internal hard drives share the same bus, it would be wise to make the external drive the highest ID and terminate it.

ummm, no. BOTH ENDS OF THE BUS NEED TO BE TERMINATED. that means if you have an external device it needs to be terminated as well as the last device on the internal cable. if the card is at either end of the bus (if there are only external devices or only internal devices) it will automatically terminate itself. i have a hard time imagining anyone frying a scsi card simply by hooking up a jaz drive. i suggest you try troubleshooting the card and devices by starting with an known good drive (that is terminated, and then adding more devices once you get that one working. again, if you add devices in the chain AFTER one that is terminated, they will not be seen by the bus.

Stick with Adaptec. Initio cards are a royal pain IMHO. ...on a Mac SCSI is SCSI. You only need a driver if you need access to a control app- to change card settings or update firmware... Update firmware!!! This will repair 'software' problems with your card (most probable) Also, if your external SCSI bus is LVD, buy a 2930u Adaptec card, just for that...and your burner. SCSI speed reverts to the slowest link on the chain. Unless it is a dual channel card. Which case, each channel reverts to the slowest link.

RE: SCSI Knowledge needed!!

Am I just extremely lucky or why is it that my SCSI chain has always worked perfectly? I don't even have an Adaptec card, only a Formac, and I connected a Zip, Jaz, my burner, a CD-Rom and on the end my Akai sampler. OK, I had to fiddle with it a little bit untill I found the right order in which to plug everything in, but when I read this thread I start to believe there' s a SCSI-angel watching over me... Good luck everyone who hasn't got a similar angel:-) Have a nice day...
