Hello everyone, I've been using my old MBox 2 with Reaper for the last 6 months or so. I am a convert from Pro Fools LE. I still use Reaper rewired into PT sometimes, but find my myself using PT less and less. Anyways, about 2 weeks ago, my MBox just stopped working with Reaper and my other non-PT software. It still works with PT, but I just can't get it to work in any other programs. So I've been thinking about ditching the MBox and PT altogether. Does anyone have any recommendations for audio interfaces? Doesn't have to be anything too fancy, same basic setup as MBox would be just fine. Thanks!
Do you still need to run PT? Are you running PT9 or earlier versions? Only Avid/Digidesign interfaces will work with PT8 or earlier, you probably already know. Since you have an Mbox I assume you don't need more than 2 mic preamps, here are some recommendations: Focusrite Saffire 6 Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 M-Audio ProFire 610 Presonus FireStudio Mobile Cakewalk FA-66 (formerly Edirol)
My profire 610 has been near perfection TBH, but you should google around with "problem" searches and see what people are saying overall. Some fine suggestions right now on that list. @PT: I might be off my rocker, but I think you NEED the mbox to run PTLE (version 9 is the exception) I think it's a dongle of sorts.
I have a Focusrite vocal channel (preamp and comp, se-ess, etc, and some old Saffire interfaces (Pro-10, Pr0-26). Apart from the chunky wall-wart (the unit is rackmount!) and the slightly confusing monitoring/setup software, they are good units and I'd recommend them -very good preamps for the price. As somewhat explained above, they have internal DSP monitoring mixers which allow you to monitor inputs at zero latency as the monitoring paths don't go through the firewire and your computer buffers, but straight to the outputs you Configure. Later saffires have IEC mains inputs -no wall-wart, or find an old one for less money. >
I'm going to agree with suggestions towards Focusrite or Presonus. Both very good brands which get the job done and very well at that. As for M-Audio, I'm going to say that's the gear I personally own. I've worked with lots of Focusrite, Presonus and MoTU gear, and would love to own it, but what I have at home is M-Audio, and mostly secondhand gear. My ProFire 2626 has never given me any problems when I need it in action. It's completely incompatible with my current Windows based laptop (Toshiba Tecra M11) but it has never had a problem with my first gen MacBook Pro, or my latest 2011 MacBook Pro. I use it to record lots of concerts in Reaper, Audition (now), as well as Logic, Soundtrack or once in a while Pro Tools. That said, I work at a computer shop, and have a ton of computers lying around to play with, and I do have my interfaces with my from time to time for testing, and I've had no problems getting my gear set up in Windows machines. There are plenty of driver problems with M-Audio, I'm very well aware, but I would say there are just as many people who do have a problem as there are people who have their interfaces working without a problem.

Chrisharbin, I could not help notice that you have a good computer and Windows 7 ultimate and that you have hearing! Grab yourself an Orpheus interface, you will not be disappointed. I searched for many years and because money is hard to come buy avoided a purchase like this until I made the plunge in desperation. The latest version of Reaper works like a charm. I have a Black Lion Audio 02 also, however because it broke for 6 months I was forced into the Orpheus and I really have not touched Pro Tools 8 since. (The Black Lion Audio 002 has a nice sound but the Orpheus is just wonderful ) Grinder
